from fibre to fabric

2018

“ewoolution — from fibre to fabric” displays the quality of sheep’s wool and examines how the material is processed. Through a series of workshops, processing the wool is practiced – from shearing, washing, carding and spinning to woven fabric. The materiality of wool is experienced and marks a clear disparity to the intangible digital age. But the fabric also becomes an information carrier.
A woven QR code takes the viewer to the website ewoolution.ch that gives further insight into the processing of sheep wool — from fibre to fabric.

The code as a motive points to the similarities of weaving and digital systems. The QR code is a
two-dimensional code that encodes data in a binary system of black and white squares. The processing of wool by hand is a slow process, compared to the speed of current digital technologies. Here the woven QR code creates a connection.
