Unravelling the Warp

Weaving performance at Kunstkapel, Amsterdam
December 2022

During the event “Fall Back: Eternal Returns V: Fall Back to the Loom: Recurring Figures in a weaveworld” I performed weaving alongside different musicians and fibre artist Samm Lewis. The experimental interplay of the sounds of weaving, spinning and various instruments lasted for two hours. The warp, usually wrapped around the part of the loom called the warping beam, was stretched across the room, held in tension by the weight of ceramic birds. As the interweaving of instruments and sounds of making fabric proceeded, the warp got shorter and shorter, letting the birds fly high.

Implementing sounds of the loom and responding the rhythmic sound of weaving were the groups “Perpetual Bike Crash” (Francisco Garrido, Michael Murray & Joshua Lutz) and “Todo Modo Too” (Alan Purves & Dirk Bruinsma).
