					Weaving conversations between Palestine and Jordan

					September 2023, March &#38;amp; April 2024

				
					During my residency at Dar Jacir in Bethlehem, Palestine, I started investigating Palestinian textiles in relation to oppression and resistance. Visiting weavers in Samou3, a village in the south of the West Bank, I learnt about traditional weaving techniques and how practicing a craft under oppression becomes an act of resistance. 
Due to the accelerated genocide and intensified attacks on Gaza and the whole of Palestine since October I paused my research and left Palestine. In spring 2024 I continued my artist residency at MMAG Foundation in Amman, Jordan. Learning from Jordanian weavers how to set up the ground loom, the same type of loom weavers in Palestine work with, I aimed to patch together the two places through a shared craft.
Working with both Palestinian and Jordanian wool I wove two pieces on the ground loom, stitched together they form a projection screen. The projected video, edited by Sarah Saleh, work tells the story of the weaving and its materiality – from women weaving on the ground loom to activists trying to protect Palestinian shepherds from settler attacks. &#38;nbsp;

In a small publication, designed by Siwar Kraytem, 
I gathered the experiences I made during my artistic residency in Bethlehem as well as in Amman. Weaving together conversations, images, textiles, and the words of people I met, I trace my search for wool and bring together research and encounters. Moments of exchange and collaboration are highlighted through written contributions by Lama Aloul and Lara Salous. Together with Julina Vanille Bezold we held a workshop at Jadal Space for Culture and Knowledge, inviting participants to collectively weave on our collaborative project “Reimagining Looms”.

Interweaving (dis)placed ecologies and narrativesSwitzerland, Palestine, Netherlands&#38;nbsp; August 2023 – February 2025
August 2023 marked the beginning of the project “Reimagining Looms: Interweaving (dis)placed ecologies and narratives”, a collaboration between myself and Julina Vanille Bezold. Our endeavor involves a portable weaving loom that accompanies us as we host workshops and gatherings in diverse spaces, using locally-sourced materials. Sparking conversations about belonging, heritage, and (dis)placement, our loom becomes an archive of stories and a facilitator of dialogue. The loom, as our collaborator, harmonizes with local elements, fostering conversations and connections among participants, integrating human and non-human collaborators into the process. 

In April 2024 we held a workshop at Jadal space for Culture and Knowledge in Amman, Jordan. Particpiants were invited to learn about different materials from our material library and collectively weave.

	While residing in “la Casa Vecchia” in Tegna, southern Switzerland, we crafted the first model of our modular weaving loom, sourced local materials, and wove by the tranquil riverside. Our modular loom accompanies us to different cultural spaces and across borders. We held collective weaving sessions with “FINTA bauen” at the Zürcher Theaterspektakel and the “Tankstell Seegüetli” festival in Wädenswil. The loom travelled with me to Bethlehem, Palestine, where we wanted to host multiple sessions around collective weaving focusing on the history of Palestinian textiles. Due to the current aggressions in Gaza and the whole of Palestine we postponed the planned workshops in Bethlehem and hosted some gatherings around the loom in Amsterdam in solidarity with Palestine.

Weaving performance at Kunstkapel, Amsterdam
December 2022

During the event “Fall Back: Eternal Returns V: Fall Back to the Loom: Recurring Figures in a weaveworld” I performed weaving alongside different musicians and fibre artist Samm Lewis. The experimental interplay of the sounds of weaving, spinning and various instruments lasted for two hours. The warp, usually wrapped around the part of the loom called the warping beam, was stretched across the room, held in tension by the weight of ceramic birds. As the interweaving of instruments and sounds of making fabric proceeded, the warp got shorter and shorter, letting the birds fly high.
Implementing sounds of the loom and responding the rhythmic sound of weaving were the groups “Perpetual Bike Crash” (Francisco Garrido, Michael Murray &#38;amp; Joshua Lutz) and “Todo Modo Too” (Alan Purves &#38;amp; Dirk Bruinsma).

Graduation work Master of Arts Sandberg Instituut&#38;nbsp;
Amsterdam &#38;nbsp;&#124;&#38;nbsp; 2022Interactive weaving installation, handspun linen, hanging bricks audio, videoThe installation offers an insight into the processing of the flax plant into woven linen. Being part of the linen project in the Netherlands I learnt about the traditions of cultivating fabric and what it means to be committed to collective care and work. 

Entering the thread space, the visitor makes contact with a history of materials and labor. Threads are held in tension by the weight of bricks which were found in the linen field. Whoever chooses to weave may pick up a thread and choose a part in the weaving to continue. The memories of producing the linen thread are woven into the installation in sound, small speakers in between the bricks; emitting the discoveries, complaints, and laughter of the collaborators as they turned the soil, retted the flax

Weaving Futures

During this atelier participants invested in different ways of up-cycling textile waste and used clothes. Together, they engaged with notions of identity, and feed conversations of our inner world with the environment and communities we are part of. Participants were invited to engage with several textile design techniques, such as embroidery, garment construction, pattern making, weaving and patchwork. From this creative process they made new baskets and wearables for the community.

	By up-cycling post-consumer textiles collected from and around Sanem, the atelier aims to engage critically and creatively with this cycle. Tracing Threads of Collectivity

Exhibition Mediamatic, Amsterdam &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;October 2021&#38;nbsp;With our class from the Sandberg Instituut we had 
an exhibition in Mediamatic, a cultural space in Amsterdam.
The loom I built, I call it thread space rather than a frame, stretches ist warp threads up to a wooden beam, responding to the architecture of the space. On the night of the opening we started weaving collectively. I started to weave from the bottom, in white cotton threads, the same material as the warp. I decided to restrict myself to only that material, the white cotton thread; it seems to me like a skeleton, building the main structure of this weaving in space.I wanted my woven swatches to be invitations for fellow weavers to interweave with them, extend and respond to what I started.

Gathering on Weaving
writing published in “Durable Discussions: essays from the Disarming Design Department &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
In this essay I invite the reader to think along with me and different actors through different processes of making and being. What are the
threads we pick up and pass on in our process of becoming? Weaving as a practice, form, and method structures this essay. Fabric is made
through the interlocking of two sets of threads at right angles; the warp and the weft. A loom is needed: an apparatus or a frame that holds
the warp under tension as long as the weaving proceeds. Into this structure, the weft threads are introduced by passing them over and under
those of the warp. Once the weaving is complete and removed from the loom, the fabric holds together only by the interlocking of its threads
and fibers.

	Woven Stories
Textile travel across India &#38;nbsp;&#124;&#38;nbsp; august 2019
Woven stories is a research project focusing on traditional weaving techniques in India. Together with Anna Merlo I travelled to different parts of India during the summer of 2019. Our goal was to gain insight into different weaving techniques and practices. We were visiting places to learn more about traditional techniques as well as new and contemporary methods in the textile industry. As a means of documentation we wove our impressions on small frame looms, using local materials and techniques.
We created a weaving kit so we could carry our weaving diary with us. Our works on the loom were inspired by techniques, colours, shapes and materials we were surrounded by. We found some materials in local markets, and we acquired others, like hand spun wool or leftovers from carpet knotting, from the textile manufacturers we visited.

	Woolen Jacket
Tegna, Switzerland &#38;nbsp;
2019-2020
My continuing interest in natural materials such as sheep‘s wool led me to manufacture a wool jacket. 

In collaboration with Anna Merlo, we manufactured two individual pieces. In autumn 2019 I spent 7 weeks in Ticino, southern Switzerland, dedicating myself to the production of the fabric –&#38;nbsp; from cleaning the wool to spinning and weaving the fabric.

Loomd bags

Bag label since march 2023

Loomd bags are made of waxed cotton fabric and different coloured zippers and inside fabric. The black strap finds its way around the bag in a woven way.

Karo Rugs
Internship Anna Saarinen &#38;nbsp;

In spring 2019 I was able to do an internship in the Anna Saarinen Textilmanufaktur. Anna Saarinen’s rugs are manufactured on hand looms, mostly in Switzerland and partly in Finland. The rugs are woven with cotton cut offs from the industry. During my internship I designed the rug series “karo”&#38;nbsp;
